WORKS strategically implements programs and services into our housing locations. Since 2007 enrichment and healthy food programs have been successfully integrated into five locations. The Earth Cultures program is comprised of four components:

equitableroots Healthy Food Distribution and Social Enterprise including organic produce markets, Community Based Supported Agriculture (CBSA), related jobs and job training

Real Food for Life Healthy Food Education through free on-site cooking and nutrition classes

Seedscapes Community Gardens led by Master Gardeners who train residents on how to design, build and maintain gardens

Leadership, Engagement, Action Driven Stewardship (LEADS) Place-Based Grassroots Organizing to Affect Policy for Healthy Food Access through Resident Councils who receive guidance and leadership training from professional community organizers and policy analysts

WORKS’ Definition of Healthy Food Access

SAFE – free of harmful pesticides and chemicals
NUTRITIOUS – rich in vitamins and nutrients; and low in unhealthy fat, salt and sugar
AFFORDABLE organic produce, nuts and grains
ACCESSIBLE – food is available within walking distance of our housing
KNOWLEDGE – people expand their knowledge and skill base related to nutrition, healthy cooking and the importance of whole foods
